HISTORY: I began Square Dance calling in 1980 in Oroville California. The clubs I called for were the Chico State Allemanders, Sierra Steppers, and the Table Mountain Stompers. It was a busy time. Calling 3 or 4 nights a week was not unusual. I stopped calling in 1984.
My wife Liz and I re-entered the activity as “Retread” dancers in 2013. That old “calling bug” was calling my name every time I stepped into a square dance hall and heard the music. After some encouragement from dancers I taught over 35 years ago and some “boundary” discussions with my wife, I decided to dust off the old microphone and begin calling again. I belong to the worldwide Callerlab organization and with that comes membership in BMI and ASCAP which provide music licensing and insurance.
We’re now calling on a regular basis and travel to many states. As we get more calling exposure, more inquiries are coming in from Square Dance clubs around the US. It’s exciting to see the dancers interest and reaction to our calling efforts. Keeping everyone fully “entertained” is something I truly strive for.
My square dance calling philosophy is to challenge the experienced dancers as much as possible while allowing the not so experienced dancers a chance to participate and grow. I enjoy the calling and the teaching. Everybody should be having as much fun as possible! We would love to see you on the dance floor!
